How to make curtains: a tutorial
To work out how much you need for your curtains, simply measure the width of your window, multiply that by 1.5 to get some gather, and then add 2cm either side for your hems.
Once you've worked that out, you can measure your drop to see how many of these widths you'll need! Don't forget to add 15cm for your hems - a nice, deep hem on your curtain will add weight to the bottoms to make sure they have the perfect fall.
Since you'll be working with larger quantities of fabric than usual for dressmaking, you want to do everything you can to avoid ironing. The best way to get around this is to hang your fabric while it's wet, and it'll settle dry and crease-free.
If you're struggling to cut your drops straight, an easy fix is to pull a thread out of the weave and then use this as a guide to cut up.
Another vital tip is to hem your curtains while they're hanging up. This will help to ensure they fall perfectly flush with the floor.
